Brooklyn Decker on Romance, Dream Costars, and Kate Upton’s ‘SI’ Cover
Even though she’s married to tennis superstar Andy Roddick, model-turned-actress Brooklyn Decker has had no trouble establishing an identity of her own.
Not only has she graced the cover of the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue and been named Esquire’s Sexiest Woman Alive, but she has also successfully made the tough transition from model to actress. Last year, she starred alongside Rihanna in Battleship and opposite Dennis Quaid in What to Expect When You’re Expecting.
What’s next for Decker? “I’m hoping to do more comedy,” she says. “I love being around funny people—you just have fun on set. Hopefully we’ll have something to announce shortly.”
This Valentine’s Day, Decker was busy promoting Gillette’s Kiss and Tell experiment, which surveyed across the country about whether they prefer men with clean-shaven faces or some scruff. The result? Eighty-five percent of women preferred a smooth face. “It was surprising to me, because mustaches and beards are quite popular,” Decker says. “But honestly, no woman wants to have sand paper on her face. I don’t want to get beard burn on my face or have bumps all over my chin!”
Decker, 25, talked to Parade.com about romance, her dream costars, her expert opinion on Kate Upton’s new Sports Illustrated cover, and more.
On who in Hollywood has the best facial hair.
“Al from Home Improvement. He has an awesome beard and he wears flannel all the time which is really cool.”
On (not) celebrating Valentine’s Day.
“I’m the worst person when it comes to Valentine’s Day. I’ve never really celebrated it. I’m usually working on Valentine’s Day, so I’ve never really been a big celebrator of it. I’m of the belief that if you need one holiday to make sure that you show somebody that you love them, then you probably need to work harder throughout the rest of the year.”
On what “romance” means to her.
“I am not romantic at all. The more romantic something is, the more unattractive it is to me. I’m kind of like a boy. I’ve never been a big romantic person. I don’t like the big sweeping gestures. I think if you can laugh with someone and have fun, that’s plenty.”
On Kate Upton’s Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue cover.
“I thought it was beautiful. The fact that they shot in Antarctica is really special. That had to be one of the most difficult things, as far as weather conditions go. I’ve had photo shoots in summer clothes on a glacier in Alaska, and that was pretty tough, but even so, it was much warmer than Antarctica and I wasn’t in a bikini!”
On staying fit while living in food-rich Austin.
“The best part about Austin is they have the most indulgent, wonderful restaurants and the best chefs, but at the same time, it’s one of the most fit cities in the country. People are really active and outside all the time. We’re lucky that it’s warm 10 months out of the year, so you can be outside all the time hiking and kayaking. There’s a big community of fitness down there, so you can eat your barbeque and have your homemade Amy’s ice cream, but then you can go run Town Lake.”
On who she’s dying to work with.
“I’d love to work with Robin Williams. I think he’s incredibly funny and a wonderful dramatic actor as well, and I feel like he would have the best stories. I just think he’s a huge talent and I would love to work with him. I’m a big fan of comedians. Jim Carrey as well, who was in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and was unbelievable in that. They would have great stories to tell and really great advice to give, and I think they’d be incredible to watch on set.”
On her life goals.
“If I died tomorrow, I would die a very happy woman, so I’m pretty content with what’s happening. Hopefully I’ll keep acting. I love making movies and I love television, so if I can keep doing this and call this my job, then I’ll consider myself one of the luckiest people.”

SUPERMODEL BROOKLYN DECKER ON WHY SHE NEVER SPENDS VALENTINE’S DAY WITH HUSBAND ANDY RODDICK
In honor of Valentine’s Day tomorrow, Gillette is hosting the World’s Largest Shave & Kiss Event tomorrow in New York at the Time Warner Center, and the event will feature an appearance from established model and aspiring actress Brooklyn Decker. As a Sports Illustrated swimsuit model, she’s nabbed quite a fan following—us among them!—and with recent roles on Fox’s “The New Girl” and the movie “Battleship,” it would seem Decker is just getting started.
We caught up with the supermodel today to chat about everything from her date night style to why she never spends Valentine’s Day with her husband Andy Roddick. Read on to hear about her upcoming event with Gillette, as well as her biggest recent splurge!
StyleCaster: When it comes to date night, how do you like to dress?
Brooklyn Decker: I’m definitely more of a tomboy than I am a feminine girl. If it’s a special day—like a birthday or holiday—I’ll try to make an effort and I’ll put on a dress, but generally, it’s just jeans and a T-shirt for me!
You’re married to former tennis star Andy Roddick. What’s been your most memorable Valentine’s Day together?
Well, Valentine’s Day always falls over the same week as the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue reveal, so I’ve been with my girlfriends on Valentine’s Day for the past six years. It’s actually a really fun way to spend the day! Andy and I aren’t huge celebrators—I haven’t gotten him a great present, I should work on that!
What’s the nicest thing he’s ever done for you?
I can’t share that! He’ll be embarrassed. That’s for me to know.
Tell us a little bit about your work with Gillette.
I’ve worked with Gillette in the past, and we did this really fun project called the Kiss and Tell experiment. We surveyed tons of women as to whether or not they preferred kissing a clean shaven guy or a stubbly guy. 85% of women said a clean shaven guy was more desirable, so tomorrow at Time Warner Center in New York we’re going to be helping guys out so they can get some action. We’re trying to break two records: The amount of kisses a couple can exchange in a minute, and the largest shave lesson in history. It’s funny to think there are already records for these, but there are!
Do you have anything in your closet that you’ll never get rid of?
I’m a bit of a hoarder so I have a bit of a hard time getting rid of my clothes. I have an annual “gift to your girlfriends” thing. Lsat year I went to the Met Ball with Tory Burch and she gave me two pairs of fox-printed flats and I wear them all the time and I’ll never get rid of them. I also have this T-shirt that my dad actually made with paint and it has a racecar on it! I wear it all the time, it fits perfectly.
Do you have any recent splurges that you’re excited about?
Way too many! I just bought a pair of Isabel Marant boots. I wear her stuff all the time. They’re sort of a flat motorcycle boot with stars on them.
Brooklyn Decker’s Perfect Date
by Andrew Daniels February 14, 2013, 01:15 pm EST
Yes, THIS woman is spending Valentine’s Day alone.
Only one guy is lucky enough to call actress/model Brooklyn Decker his Valentine today—that would be her husband, retired tennis great Andy Roddick—and he’s not even around to take her out tonight.
“Andy’s in California, so we won’t be celebrating Valentine’s,” says the 25-year-old beauty, best known for iconic spreads in the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue and roles in flicks like Just Go with It and Battleship. But Decker isn’t exactly spending the holiday alone. “Instead, I’ll be watching a bunch of couples make out with each other.”
Relax, guys—she won’t be swapping any spit. Decker partnered with Gillette to see which kind of shave women across the country find sexiest. The results: 85 percent of women surveyed preferred a clean-shaven guy to one with stubble. So today, Decker’s in New York City to help break two world records: “The first one is the world’s largest shaving lesson—and there’s already an existing record for this, which I find to be so bizarre—and then after they get the guys clean-shaven, they’re going to try to break the record for the most kisses between a couple in 1 minute.”
Just another February 14, right? Before the event, we asked Decker to offer up her best Valentine’s Day advice—and you might be surprised to hear her stance on the holiday. Plus, she reveals her weekend plans (“air humping” and Beyoncé), sheds insight on Kate Upton’s new SI cover, and officially comments on being named one of our 100 Hottest Women of All Time.
MH: Why do you think women want a clean-shaven guy?
Decker: Well, it’s funny. I actually kind of like the look of a 5 o’clock shadow. I like a little bit of a stubble, because I think it’s kind of like mountain man-ish. But the thing is, no girl likes to feel like she has sandpaper on her face. Like if Andy has facial hair and he gives me a kiss, I leave with a little red mark on my face. So girls end up getting burn beards on their faces, which is never fun. That’s where the preference to kissing clean-shaven men comes in, which is why I think the study was so skewed in one direction.
MH: So you don’t like Andy with a beard.
Decker: Well I think it looks good that way, but I prefer to give him a kiss if it’s nice and soft, and not going to scratch my face up.
MH: Should I go run home and shave right now, so I’ve got a smooth face tonight?
Decker: Yes! That’s a really cute gift, and honestly a strong hint for a girl to drop for a guy. Because let’s be honest: We’re expected to shave our legs, right? If you’re going to kiss a girl and touch her legs, you don’t want to touch a forest—so why isn’t a guy expected to shave his face?
MH: Fair enough. While we’re on the topic, what’s your ideal Valentine’s date?
Decker: I’ve never been a big celebrator of Valentine’s Day, which sounds like I’m being Scrooge. But coincidentally, it’s the same week the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition always comes out, so I’m always with those girls. For me it was always a time to be with my girlfriends as opposed to actually celebrating the holiday, so I don’t have any plans tonight. I think it’s a really nice day, but if you have to have plans on a calendar to show somebody you like them, you’ve got to work a little bit harder.
MH: Valentine’s aside, what’s date night like in the Decker-Roddick household?
Decker: Well, our group of friends is crazy. Like, this weekend in Austin, all of our friends are getting together to watch the Air Sex World Championship. I’m so excited. It’s like an air guitar contest, but with air humping. I’m not participating, I’m only watching. But the best part about it is people had to win their state to actually make it to nationals! [Laughs]
MH: Wait, there were 50 air humping contests before this one?
Decker: Apparently! Our friend saw it advertised in Austin and said we had to come on down for it. It’s just too good not to watch. But my point with that is we always try to find really funny things for us to do with our friends. We have Sunday Fundays. Like, we’re having a Beyoncé dress-up event for her documentary premiere on Sunday. So it’s never really fancy dinners. We’re just having a really good time with all of our buddies.
MH: Besides a stubble-free face, what else can guys do to impress their women today?
Decker: Even though I don’t celebrate Valentine’s Day, I definitely don’t think it should be ignored. Because it’s Valentine’s and your girl’s probably seeing people around her get things, I think a card’s really sweet. Or a nice, thoughtful note. That would mean so much more to a girl than a big show of flowers and chocolates and dinner and all that. And while I’m sure a lot of girls like that and it’s very nice, a sweet note is fine. You’re acknowledging the holiday, but you don’t necessarily need a holiday to show affection. You don’t have to go all out.
MH: You know, you’re letting a lot of guys off the hook . . .
Decker: I know! Watch me get a ton of guys in trouble for saying that. [Laughs]
MH: Last year, we ranked you the 50th hottest woman of all time. Some of us around here thought that was way too low. I’ll give you a chance to yell at us and demand to be higher.
Decker: No, please! Are you kidding me? I can’t be complaining for being on the hot list. That’s awesome. If guys are fighting for me, I totally appreciate their efforts. Continue to fight the good fight, gentlemen.
MH: As a Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue veteran, what do you think of Kate Upton’s new cover?
Decker: I love it. I love that they went to Antarctica. That’s so wild, and that’s never happened, so I think it’s a really beautiful cover.
MH: Apparently Upton said her body shut down after the shoot, since it was so cold there.
Decker: Really? I’ve never been. I went to Alaska for a shoot once, and that was hard enough, but that’s mild compared to Antarctica. I can’t even imagine. Where do you even fly to get to Antarctica? I don’t even know how that works.
MH: Beats me. Sadly, you won’t be appearing in this year’s issue.
Decker: I didn’t do it last year either. It’s funny: I kind of kicked off my career with SI, and the last modeling photoshoot I ever did was with the magazine. But ever since then, it’s been all acting. I miss the girls, and I miss the editors, because they were like family to me. But I did it for 7 years, so it got to a point where it was just time to do different things. For me to really try to be an actor, I think I had to give up the modeling thing.
MH: So it’s officially off the table?
Decker: Yeah. I haven’t done anything in 2 years. I don’t think it’ll happen again any time soon. Sorry!
MH: You just broke the heart of every guy in America.
Decker: Oh my gosh! Have you seen the other girls? Like, Marisa Miller did it for 7 or 8 years, and she left. People missed her, but they’re always bringing in new girls. I loved my time with them, obviously. They gave me my career. But I did my time, and it’s time for other girls to get their chance and kick some butt.

Brooklyn Decker attends The world’s largest shave & kiss event with Gillette at the Time Warner Center on Feb. 14, 2013, in New York.
The 25-year-old actress was in New York away from her sweetheart, Andy Roddick, to work a “Shave and Kiss” event for Gillette. Guys made sure they had a clean shave before puckering up in hopes of breaking the world record for the most kisses in one minute by a couple.
“It’s one of the funnier things that I’ve ever seen because I think the record is 258 kisses in a minute. So if you think about that, it’s four kisses a second so these people are grabbing each other’s faces and basically banging their heads against one another,” Decker told CBSNews.com. “At least they’re doing it clean-shaven and they’re not giving their girlfriends beard-burn, but it’s pretty funny to watch.”
After the shaving lesson and kissing contest, Decker, who graced the 2010 cover of Sports Illustrated, spent some quality time with friends in New York on Thursday night.
“I’ve never really been a big celebrator of it [Valentine’s Day]. I’m usually with my girlfriends,” she said, adding, “This is around the time that Sports Illustrated comes out, so I’ve always been with the girls of the magazine since I was 18 years old. But some of my best Valentine’s memories would probably be when you’re a really little kid and you’re in school and you had to make Valentines for everyone in your class. It was the sweetest thing.”
Now Decker has a permanent Valentine. Decker and Roddick, 30, married in April 2009 and because of their busy schedules, Decker says their relationship still feels fresh. “Luckily travel allows me to do that,” she said.
Decker likely has some traveling coming up very soon, as she’s close to nabbing her next film role.
“I especially love comedy, so we have something in the works now that I can’t announce yet, but hopefully soon I can announce a comedy that I have coming up. It will be pretty fun,” she said. “That’s [comedy] definitely something I find I’m most comfortable in.”
Decker showed off her acting skills in 2012’s “What to Expect When You’re Expecting” and “Battleship,” as well as 2011’s “Just Go With It.”
And she recently made a guest appearance on the Fox sitcom, “New Girl,” starring Zooey Deschanel. A big fan of the show (she’s seen every episode), Decker says she jumped at the opportunity.
“The cast was incredible. This is their second season, so they’ve been working together for a little while now,” Decker said. “The chemistry is great. It’s very fraternal. Everyone’s improving with each other and throwing jokes at each other. It was a great familial set.”
After her “New Girl” appearance, Decker, who previously appeared on “Ugly Betty” and “Chuck,” may have caught the television bug.
“TV is something that’s pretty new to me,” she said. “I kind of started in television and then I did mostly movies and I’ve gone back a little bit to television and I really love it.”
It’s been a few years since Decker has done any modeling, as she continues to shift her focus to film and TV.
“I’m doing all acting and I’m just lucky that I’m actually able to work so hopefully, knock on wood, I’ll stay lucky and continue to work on the acting side,” she said.
