What Makes Brooklyn Laugh

Posted by andre with No Comments

ESQUIRE.COM: This is your first big role in a TV comedy. Are you a funny person?

BROOKLYN DECKER: I’m more one of those people you laugh at and not with. I’m not the one with the jokes, I’m the one who falls on her face going up a flight of steps. I’ve made people laugh my whole life, it’s never been willingly. This was a highly different format for me: having jokes, letting them breathe, and making people laugh at you.

ESQ: What’s your type of humor?

BD: I have a very dirty sense of humor.

ESQ: You do?

BD: Yeah, I like pressing the envelope. I think it’s funny when something bold comes out of someone’s mouth that you’re not expecting, things that catch you off guard. That’s what I really like. I like an English sense of humor: dry, dirty, a little bit off. That’s kind of my taste.

ESQ: One of the first lines that comes out of your character Jules’s mouth is “I had sex for 12 straight hours.” Have you ever known anyone who’s been open about their sex habits like that?

BD: I have a group of friends who are very open in that way. I feel like I’m more of the Andy-Bobby [played by Majandra Delfino and Kevin Connolly] couple in my life. Most of my friends have lived at my house, we talk about everything, there are no boundaries. For me, that’s something people would talk about. But I have personally never known a person to have sex for 12 hours straight, no.

‘Sexiest Woman’ Brooklyn Decker transitions into TV comedy

‘Sexiest Woman’ Brooklyn Decker transitions into TV comedy

Rather than regarding her measurements as a blessing or a curse, Brooklyn Decker has a measured attitude.

Decker, who is one of the stars of the new sitcom Friends With Better Lives, is a former model who in 2010 was the readers’ choice as Esquire magazine’s “sexiest woman alive.” But Decker neither takes credit for her good looks nor shies away from them.

“You guys, it’s ridiculous,” said Decker, referring specifically to the Esquire honour. “It’s like, ‘Thanks Photoshop,’ I mean, it’s so nice, especially when it’s that time of the month, and you feel disgusting, and you have a big breakout on your face and you’re super bloated, it’s nice to be able to think, ‘Okay, there was once a day of looking beautiful.’ But, I mean, it’s nothing you earn.

“I’m certainly not going to bite the hand that fed me. I know people take meetings with me because I had a name for (modeling). But I’m not going to take credit for my looks, my parents gave them to me, and then makeup and hair and Photoshop makes it better.

“I’m also not going to say, ‘Oh, I’m pretty, therefore I can’t get great roles.’ That’s bull—-. I’ve had an amazing career because doors opened for me (through modeling). Now it’s up to me to prove that I can stay here.”

For Decker, “here” means acting in general, but also Friends With Better Lives in particular. The sitcom debuts Monday, March 31 on CBS and City, right after the series finale of How I Met Your Mother.

Friends With Better Lives is kind of a How I Met Your Mother “replacement wannabe,” although the humour is more Two and a Half Men or 2 Broke Girls-ish. Friends With Better Lives is about adult friends at different stages of their personal and professional existences, and the ensemble cast includes Decker, Kevin Connolly, James Van Der Beek, Majandra Delfino, Zoe Lister-Jones and Rick Donald.

The 26-year-old Decker, who is married to retired tennis pro Andy Roddick, re-confirmed she has given up modeling. She determined two years ago that if she were serious about transitioning into acting, she didn’t want modelling in her mind as a fallback.

“I just wanted to do good work, and I love comedy, it’s a medium I’m comfortable in,” Decker said. “I wanted to work with really good people. I got lucky it’s in this format. Up until this point, I’ve made my decisions based on who I’m working with, and I’ve been really happy with that.”

Nonetheless, Decker admitted she had to learn some things about doing a sitcom in front of a live audience.

“Letting jokes breathe, I’m terrible at that,” Decker said. “As you can tell, I talk, talk, talk, and I’m super fast. So letting jokes breathe and letting the audience laugh was something to get used to.”

The world got used to gawking at Brooklyn Decker. Now she’s showing off her funny side, too.

We’ll see how she measures up.

CBS introduced its prime-time 2013-2014 schedule on Wednesday, featuring eight new series — five comedies and three dramas. Five of the new series will premiere in the fall and three at mid-season.

Some big names are on the slate, including Robin Williams, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Will Arnett, Brooklyn Decker, Anna Faris, Allison Janney and Tony Shalhoub.

“Our team has 20 shows renewed…Having this sort of stability makes us really excited,” Leslie Moonves, CBS president and CEO, said Wednesday during a morning conference call. “All I can tell you is the network is alive and healthy,” he added before the TV slate was announced.

CBS noted that comedy is a “priority for us,” as well as offering “more originals, fewer repeats.” A total of 20 shows will return to the CBS schedule, including the No. 1-rated “The Big Bang Theory,” “Mike & Molly” and “2 Broke Girls.” “How I Met Your Mother” will return for a final season, with viewers finally getting to meet and know the mother.

Tuesdays will be dedicated to drama with “NCIS,” “NCIS: Los Angeles” and “Person of Interest.” Thursdays, meanwhile, will feature a two-hour comedy block from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. ET.

New Comedies

“The Crazy Ones” is a single-camera comedy, starring Robin Williams and Sarah Michelle Gellar. This workplace series follows “a larger-than-life advertising genius whose unorthodox methods and unpredictable behavior would get him fired…if he weren’t the boss.” Simon Roberts (Williams) leads a powerful agency, alongside his daughter Sydney (Sarah Michelle Gellar).

“The Millers” is a multi-generational show, starring Will Arnett, Margo Martindale, Beau Bridges and JB Smoove. Arnett portrays Nathan Miller, a recently divorced news reporter looking forward to living the singles’ life until his parents’ marital problems unexpectedly derail his plans.

“Mom” is an edgy family comedy from executive producer Chuck Lorre, starring Anna Faris and Allison Janney. Faris plays a newly sober single mother raising two children. It follows her ups and downs as she tries to navigate it all. Christy (Faris) is a waitress at a posh Napa Valley establishment who is four months clean and doing her best to be a good mom and overcome a history of questionable choices. Janney plays her critical, estranged mother.

“We Are Men” is an ensemble single-camera comedy starring Tony Shalhoub, Kal Penn, Chris Smith and Jerry O’Connell. Debuting on Monday nights, this series will follow four newly single men, living in a short-term housing complex, who are trying to figure out life and love.

The romantic comedy, “Friends with Better Lives,” is schedules to launch mid-season. It centers on six friends at different stages in their lives – ranging from divorced to single. Though they seem happy, each of them secretly questions if the grass is greener on the other side. It stars Majandra Delfino, Kevin Connolly, James Van Der Beek, Brooklyn Decker, Rick Donald and Zoe Lister Jones.

New Dramas

CBS will introduce two new dramas scheduled for Mondays at 10:00 p.m ET; one to launch in the fall, the other to debut in early 2014. The first — “Hostages” — will kick off in the fall. The 15-episode, highly-serialized thriller series from Jerry Bruckheimer stars Toni Collette, Dylan McDermott and Tate Donovan. It follows a doctor, played by Collete, who is taken hostage on the night before she’s supposed to operate on president of the United States.

After the season finale of “Hostages” in January, CBS will put “Intelligence” in that same time slot. Another high-action drama, “Intelligence” sees the return of Josh Holloway of “Lost” fame. It also stars Marg Helgenberger and Meghan Ory. Holloway plays Gabriel, a high-tech intelligence operative enhanced with a super-computer microchip in his brain. He’s the first human ever to be connected directly into the worldwide information grid — with access to Internet, WiFi, telephone and satellite data.

Midseason will see the premiere of the new legal drama, “Reckless. It’s set in Charleston, S.C., “where a gorgeous Yankee litigator and a charming Southern attorney must hide their intense mutual attraction as a police sex scandal threatens to tear the city apart.”
